Equine:
Your horse’s teeth are very different from your own. Their teeth, called hypsodont teeth, are 4 ½ to 5 inches long when they are young adults with the majority of the tooth underneath the gumline and as they age the teeth continuously erupt from the jaw. Horses chew in a circular grinding motion and wear down the exposed crown surface of their teeth. Often tooth wear is uneven because of conformation, food type, or other reasons which will cause hooks and points on the tooth surfaces. If your horse is dropping food, balling up hay, chewing with his/her mouth open, or resisting the bit he/she could be developing dental problems.
It is important to maintain your horses’ teeth in order for them to be comfortably bitted and to enable them to chew their food properly. Deepwood offers manual and power teeth floating to correct hooks and points and will also do wolf tooth extractions and other simple tooth extractions. We lightly sedate all our patients prior to treatment in order to increase their comfort and safety. Our veterinarians are available to come to your barn to perform this task or you may schedule an appointment and bring your horses to our barn for a float at a discounted rate.
Pigs:
Some pigs develop tusks that require trimming to maintain comfort. Our veterinarians can come to your home/farm and perform this procedure. To reduce stress and increase safety sedation is used only if necessary.
